Weird world of Caviar Products

This week I have forsaken the sun and spent a little time trawling the web, as one does. Perhaps not a very productive use of time, but it can be rather interesting all the same!

I did come across a European producer who was marketing caviar as a beauty product. Nothing particularly new in this approach as caviar oils and extracts have been used in this way for ever and a day. However, this producer had skipped the processing element. The product was offered in a traditional tin, just the same as the gourmet caviars, but with no salt added. I think that the idea was that you then rubbed the fish eggs into your skin. Presumably, you then wash it off in a bath of champagne.

While I hope that you will eat and savour our caviar, I would not mind too much if you wanted to rub it into your wrinkles. However, I might query your sanity (but not your order) if you were buying it to feed to your cat. If you feel such a need, you will no doubt be pleased to know that our American cousins have developed caviar pet food, for both cats and dogs. The really good news is that it is only $250 a pound and can be found on sale in a well known part of LA.

I think that I will stick to a bar of soap and Pedigree Chum.
