OSCIETRA CAVIAR – AMBROSIA OR MIDDLE-OF-THE-ROAD?

OSCIETRA CAVIAR –AMBROSIA OR MIDDLE-OF-THE- ROAD? Traditionally, the UK caviar market consisted mainly of Beluga, Oscietra and Sevruga, which was priced in that order. Beluga came in red tins, the Oascietra in green and the Sevruga in red – a traditional colour scheme that we are still happy to follow. So should we view Oscietra caviar as the poor relation to Beluga, or as “Food for the Gods” in its own right? Oscietra caviar comes from the Oscietra sturgeon, latin name Acipenser Gueldenstaedtii, which I cant pronounce either. It is... Read More

A Caviar Ode to the General Election

The more I hear, the more I see The election and caviar synergy Thus inspired I am to write a rhyme And give you offers for Election time………………   Blue for Beluga and the Tories too In from Italy just for you Large and creamy with some finesse Dave and Boris, an Eton Mess?   Our Oscietra, it is in the Green That squeaky voice does make me scream The name Caroline Lucas I can recall I am afraid the other one, not at all.   Sevruga and Labour are... Where to eat Caviar

A little while ago, I was asked to write a piece for  a yacht charter company. They got quite insistent so I did manage to get round to it and duly sent it across the water to the US of A. I thought it was rather good. I dont know what they thought of it as they never even thanked me, let alone commented. On the basis of “waste not, want not” here it is in all is glory: “Now, I am not known to be a fusspot, and certainly... Read More

What does Caviar taste like?

Recently, I was talking to one of our customers who actually said that she had read my blogs and thought they were rather good. Not sure to believe her or not, but I got so excited I thought that I had better write another one! “What does Caviar taste like?” – a simple question that we get asked from time to time. It could deserve a simple answer – “Like Caviar” but that would not be awfully helpful! Helpful or not, it is rather true. Hard as we try to... Read More

Caviar From Afar

One of the nice parts of this job is being approached by people wanting to sell me lovely things. This is particularly good when free samples are offered. Though sadly this is never often enough or large enough! Some approaches are much more straightforward than others. We ideally like a well established farm in western Europe that we can visit easily. I have been talking to one that thinks it is in Russia, but is not. By the time you read this post, it may well be! I am not... Read More

Great blog. Awesome content, really enjoyed it. Will read more.

Gosh, I really must be good at this blog writing lark. Everyday I get inundated with responses along the lines of what I have put in the title. Strangely enough, none of the responders seem to comment on the actual content. Not one says anything about Caspian Caviar, or indeed caviar in general. Could it be that my fan club never actually read my blog? It is terrible to think that they could be posting such “awesome” comments when they dont actually have any interest in caviar or other fine... Read More

Cocaine and Caviar – not all whizz bang!

Many moons ago, this very good friend of mine went to one of those racey parties that I can only dream about, or perhaps read about in a tabloid. During the evening, a young lady offered him some coke, of the type that does not come in a can. Not wanting to appear a nerd, he gave it  ago and sat back and waited for something sensational to happen. Of course, nothing much did happen. Sensing his disappointment, the young lady helpfully said “It gets better the more you take.”... Read More

“Fully Sustainable” Caviar? Get away!

Last week, my friend Darren started an interesting debate on LinkedIn. He raised the issue of the possible benefits of caviar from no-kill farms and asked if it was any good. The majority of the respondents stated that it was not very good as the required hormone injections did something peculiar to the eggs. One respondent did state that, like traditionally produced caviar, it could be good depending on the skill of the farming and processing. To be honest, I have never actually tried it. One reason being is that... Read More

Weird world of Caviar Products

This week I have forsaken the sun and spent a little time trawling the web, as one does. Perhaps not a very productive use of time, but it can be rather interesting all the same! I did come across a European producer who was marketing caviar as a beauty product. Nothing particularly new in this approach as caviar oils and extracts have been used in this way for ever and a day. However, this producer had skipped the processing element. The product was offered in a traditional tin, just the... Read More

Love is in the eggs

It has been a little while since I have addressed the blog issue. It got rather hectic in the run up to Christmas – very, in fact. It was great but it did become all consuming. Then there was January – catching up after the Christmas rush and managing to address a few pheasants. Now life is getting back to normal, with the thankfully short month of February upon us. The real highlight of February, (barring the wife’s birthday of course!) is naturally St Valentine’s Day. There can really be... Read More
